Article 04, paisea 010. The green ring of Vitoria-Gasteiz. Jesús Antonio González Tejedo.

Vitoria Gasteiz, capital of the Basque Country autonomous region, with over 225,000 inhabitants, has a long tradition of urban planning, with a General Urban Structuring Plan in place since the 1960s. It is located in the centre of Alava province, in the natural region of the Llanada Alavesa, the meeting point of two great biogeographical regions, the Eurosiberian and the Mediterranean, in a natural corridor which unites the Pyrenean and Cantabrian axes, considered to be key areas for the conservation of biodiversity in the European continent.

The tensions of a city in full development can be felt on its outskirts, where a great number of environmental changes come together. These alterations can be seen either as threats or as natural elements of varying singularity that provide us with interesting opportunities and great potential. The Green Ring aims to integrate these threats and opportunities into its environmental, social, economic and educational objectives.

IMAGEN

At present the Green Ring covers almost 623 hectares, consisting of 80 hectares of water (rivers and lakes), 170 of forest, 164 of meadows, 135 of scrubland, and less than 3 of installations and facilities. The execution of the Green Ring project has consisted of a series of projects which can be divided into two types: the environmental restoration and conditioning of spaces and the construction of infrastructures and facilities for the city.
