The mantra is clear, if not deafening: conventional rooftops are impermeable and reflective, adversely affecting the quality of our water and air. One way to ameliorate these potential threats to our environment is to apply living systems onto surfaces that would otherwise be impervious to natural and climatic occurrences. Even individuals with little exposure to environmental design now know of green roofs and their benefits.

The concept of the green roof as a way to provide more permeable surface and usable space without taking up additional land is easy to understand, and should be equally easy to implement at various scales. The technology has been present since the Babylonians were building ziggurats and hanging gardens in 700 BC. The materials may have changed, as have the technological means by which we invent and install new products more efficiently on larger and larger scales.
