Article 03, paisea 016. Forest fires… at the crossroads between devastation and landscape improvement | Josep María Espelta Morral

Few landscapes look as utterly devastated as a forest after a fire. In just a few minutes, all the sensorial elements that lend the forest its character disappear: its great diversity of colours, shapes, smells and sounds. Immediately we ask ourselves: How long will the forest take to (heal) recover? Despite the simplicity of this question, the answer is complex and can lead to heated debates. Should nature be allowed to act alone, or should we help with the regeneration of the forest? Should we return the landscape to its original state, or can we modify it? In this article we have attempted to summarise some of the concepts that need to be taken into account when planning our intervention – or non-intervention – after a fire, based on the knowledge we have today of the ecology of fire and restoration.
