Article 01, paisea 016. Scars on the landscape and the ethics of metaphor | Ignacio Español Echániz

This article questions the aesthetically focused vision of the landscape by reconsidering the metaphors which are usually used to support it. Instead of the idea of a scar as the result of an intervention which is supposedly separate from the system and which must be rectified, another idea is proposed: the mark itself is a symbol of the landscape’s dynamics. This idea requires a
complete understanding of the system, which must also include the intervention project and its results. Responsible projects are required, based on a good knowledge of the geographical and diachronic realities of the landscape. Also put into question are the ethics behind the contemporary outlook which uses aesthetic metaphors and which lies behind many of today’s harmful landscape interventions.
